About the Book
“This illustrated glossary recovers the technical vocabulary they used — for their water, their malt, their two fermentations, and their cellars — a lexicon that Prohibition did not wear away but killed outright in 1919, and that never came back.”

About the Book

In 1840 a Bavarian named John Wagner brewed the first lager in America in a Northern Liberties back yard, and within forty years the German brewers of Brewerytown owned the city. This illustrated glossary recovers the technical vocabulary they used — for their water, their malt, their two fermentations, and their cellars — a lexicon that Prohibition did not wear away but killed outright in 1919, and that never came back.
